Why did you start your business?
Some days a lot of us can feel down about owning a small business and start thinking about quitting. Things just may not be going correctly at the time, or you aren’t getting the amount of feedback you were hoping for, etc. My feeling is that those are the days when you should think about what else there is for you. If you quit your small business or sold it, what would you do then? Would you still need an income to support yourself and your family? If so, are you going to be staring at a 9-5 job with a commute? How many 9-5 jobs are there out there that will allow you to work for the good of the company instead of just trying to claw your way to the top? How many of them are out there right now? Those types of thoughts can be instant motivators to get you back into why you started the business in the first place.
There was probably a reason right? Did you start your business to become financially independent? If so, are you willing to give up that possibility to become dependent on someone else’s management? There are millions of companies out there and a lot of them are run very well, but most of the time you don’t really know that until you have been in the company for a year or so.
The point of this post is to get you to think about why you started something (a blog, a business, etc.) and what you are getting out of it, and if you can make some changes to get out what you want. Nurturing a business takes time. Blogs take time. Microsoft was not built in a day. It took a couple guys to quit college and make a sale and find funding, just to be a tiny company. From there they built it into a small company and from there they were able to attract better managers and build it into a bigger company. This process started shortly after I was born. By the time I was 15 or so, sure Microsoft was a big company, but our computer labs at school still only had 1 PC and a whole lab of Macs. We were learning MS Dos in one classroom that actually had about 15 PC’s, but those were for limited use.
What begat my post today? I read a post on Andy Liu’s site the other day that went over some of the reasons why people quit and thought to myself that a lot of my readers could be in a similar situation. So head on over there, read his five reasons and the explanation that follows. He always has great insight. One of the purposes of the Johnny Optimist blog is to keep up motivation about you small business, blog, and any other endeavours you are pursuing.

Thanks for the comment. I would also wager that the biggest reason for starting a business is to make money, but there are some out there at take pay cuts just to have the option of being their own boss and making their own decisions.

I started it because my regular job was falling short of supplying me with the amount of funds I need for planning my desired future as well as some needs of the present itself. I am hoping to make the business be a success so I can focus on it more down the road and leave the regular job.
